Half Moon Bay had its beginnings as an agricultural community. It started developing significantly only in the 1840s. At that time it was known as San Benito, later the name was changed to Spanishtown. The present name of Half Moon Bay was adopted by the area in 1874. It began progressing rapidly only after World War II and was incorporated in 1959.
Popular activities in Half Moon Bay include fishing, horse riding, golf and kite surfing. One can avail of whale watching cruises from the Pillar Point Harbor. Half Moon Bay is also famous for the Mavericks surf contest, where people have been known to surf against waves that have been as high as fifty feet. The city hosts an Art and Pumpkin Festival every October.
