Why I Moved to Oregon

Thinking of moving to Oregon? Here's a little snippet of my story on how I made the move from the Bay Area to Eugene.

I never thought I'd leave the San Francisco Bay Area. The place had woven its magic around me – the vibrant culture, the diverse neighborhoods, the undeniable buzz. But somewhere along the way, the magic started to feel more like a burden. The skyrocketing costs, the endless traffic, the constant feeling of being squeezed into a human pressure cooker – I was tired of the grind and decided that it was time to make some changes. I liked what Oregon had to offer, I had friends there, and I loved Portland, but the more I explored the Portland experience, the more I realized it was very similar to what I was already living. That's when I discovered Eugene, Oregon, and my whole perspective shifted.

Affordability: From Smaller Home to Dream Home

The San Francisco Bay Area is great, but the prices and competition for housing have become very challenging for buyers over the past few years. You’ll have to part with well over $1.4 million to get a nice family home in the Bay. I had purchased a home in the late 90’s and I was able to take advantage of the appreciation. I did a cash-out refinance at a low interest rate on my house in Pacifica, CA, and bought a great property in Eugene.

I found Eugene offers far more affordable options, allowing you to actually level up your home for the same or even less or go up to the next level. And now with remote work being very common, you can enjoy living a slower pace of life.

The average price of a home in Eugene is around $450,000 to $500,000 - making it about 1/3rd of what it costs in the Bay Area. This allowed me to invest in a more upscale home with land, and be able to take full advantage of the Eugene lifestyle.

Seriously, where else can you trade cramped city living for a nature-filled haven without breaking the bank? Eugene offers the space and luxury I craved, all at a fraction of the San Francisco price tag. In some cases, the price gap makes homeownership in Eugene much more achievable!

Traffic? Gone With the Wind

Rush hour in the Bay Area is more like a daily nightmare? Everyone is so focused on getting on the road in the afternoon, especially if you are crossing bridges. People are focused on leaving work by a specific time daily to get home 10-15 minutes earlier. More like a daily exercise in frustration. In Eugene, what I have seen called rush hour is a 10-15 minute slowdown. The lack of traffic translates to less stress, more time, and a sense of peace I never knew I was missing. This town breathes, and so do you.

Schools: From Crowded Classrooms to Nature-Infused Learning

Raising kids in the Bay Area school systems can mean a constant battle for resources, long commutes to school, or activities, and often academic levels that are less desirable. In Eugene, excellence comes with a side of fresh air. Top-rated schools, innovative programs, and stunning natural backdrops for learning – Eugene offers an educational haven for children. Imagine science lessons in lush parks; history walks through historic districts, and after-school adventures on nearby trails. That's the Eugene advantage.

Nature's Playground: No Escape Needed

Sure, the San Francisco Bay Area has Golden Gate Park and many equally charming parks. But in Eugene, nature isn't a weekend escape; it's your backyard. Hiking trails weave through towering forests, crystal-clear rivers beckon for kayaking, and the Pacific Ocean roars just a short drive away. I can step outside my door and be immersed in breathtaking beauty, no car required.

Far Enough, Close Enough: Convenience Meets Escape

Eugene feels distant enough from the frenetic pace of larger cities like Portland, Seattle, LA, and SF yet close enough for occasional flights or drives to connect with loved ones across the country. It's the perfect balance – a peaceful haven without sacrificing accessibility.

Opportunity Knocks: Embracing the Shift

The exodus from larger cities is real, and smaller towns like Eugene are brimming with potential. Remote work opens doors, and Eugene's thriving entrepreneurial spirit welcomes new ideas. If you're looking for a place where your potential can genuinely flourish, Eugene offers fertile ground.

Lifestyle Swap: From Hustle to Harmony

San Francisco buzzes with energy, but sometimes, you just need to breathe. Eugene's pace is different. Here, life unfolds with a sense of ease. Community gatherings replace crowded bars with 12-dollar beers, friendly smiles, and welcoming hi’s replace hurried glances, allowing you to truly savor life's simple pleasures. It's a lifestyle shift that nourishes the soul.

Moving from San Francisco to Eugene wasn't just about location; it was a choice to prioritize well-being, space, and connection. It was trading stress for serenity, traffic jams for nature walks, and feeling perpetually squeezed for feeling truly embraced. In Eugene, I found my haven, and I invite you to discover yours too.

Eugene: Make Your Move

I have been in Eugene for the last few years, and I can honestly say that I have zero regrets. For a far more affordable price, I have upgraded my home and lifestyle, taking full advantage of the West Coast without breaking the bank.

If you’re considering a shift like this, I have been exactly where you are, and I’d love the opportunity to help you find your dream home in Oregon. Just give me a call, and I’ll be more than happy to sit down with you to discuss what you’re looking for in Eugene!
